Interesting Cases

Kidney disease is no longer a death sentence with our geriatric feline friends.  The following case will take us through the past two and a half years of Renal Disease care of a 16 year old cat named Maggie.  Chriss, one of our Licensed Veterinary Technicians, has been carefully monitoring the treatments for Maggie.

Maggie

The initial detection of Renal (Kidney) Disease in Maggie was during a routine pre-anesthetic blood profile that was performed prior to a dental prophy.  Her kidney values were slightly elevated and the animal hospital she was visiting offered a poor prognosis with kidney failure predicted within 6 months time.

Dental disease can place additional burden on the kidneys and needed to be eliminated in order to maintain the kidney function that Maggie still had.  Here at Woodland, treatment of her kidney’s was started in order to stabilize their function and allow us to perform the much needed dental care.

Julie and Maggie

Maggie’s treatment included IV fluid care along with the prescription drugs Calcitriol, Epogen and Tumil-K.  Her diet was also changed to Hill’s K/D, a diet formulated for pets with kidney disease.  Maggie was carefully monitored with frequent physical examinations and rechecks of her kidney values and once her condition was stable, we were able to anesthetize her and perform the dental work needed.

Maggie has continued on the prescription drug therapy and diet and has been doing remarkably well.  Her owner, Julie, says that caring for Maggie during this time has been a rewarding experience because she knows she was able to help Maggie have a good quality of life.  She continues to monitor Maggie’s health both at home and with regular visits to the clinic to recheck her kidney values.

After living a full and happy life with the help of her best friend, Julie, at 16 years old, Maggie had to be euthanized.  We will all miss her.
